Buffs Heading West To Causeway Invitational

BOULDER — The No. 47-ranked Colorado women's golf team hits the midpoint of its spring season this week at the Causeway Invitational hosted by UC Davis, Feb. 23-24, at the Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Calif.
The Buffaloes are the highest-ranked team in the 10-team field, which primarily features squads from the Big West, West Coast and Mountain West Conferences. Despite being that on-paper favorite, Colorado is focused on doing what it needs to do internally to be successful.
"There's no defense in golf," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "So we just need to focus on ourselves; stick to our own processes and at the end of the day put ourselves in a good position to succeed."
Colorado returns to the Causeway Invitational for the second time. The Buffaloes took third place at this event a year ago, shooting 6-over par with three golfers in the top 10. Junior Carolyn Fuller is the lone returning golfer of that trio, tying for ninth at 1-over.
Playing at 6,086 yards, the par-72 Del Paso CC will be the shortest course that the Buffaloes have played on this year. Traditionally, Del Paso features scoreable par 5s, while also serving up some challenging par 3s.
"Del Paso has hosted some USGA events, it's well maintained, well designed and will be a fun challenge for us," Sheils said. "We'll definitely be mapping our way around (in Sunday's) practice round with that in mind."
Colorado will send all seven golfers to Sacramento, with the entire team competing in a tournament field for the first time since the season-opening Ram Classic in Fort Collins. The Buffaloes will feature the same five for the team competition as they did two weeks ago in Tucson.
Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy has been Colorado's top golfer through two events this spring with a 73.2 stroke average with a pair of top 15 finishes. She's coming off a 13th-place finish at the Thunderbird Invitational, shooting 4-over, 220.
Fuller finished just outside the top 20 at the Thunderbird Invitational at 6-over. Vanessa Ngo, Teemapat Pateetin and Maya McVey round out Colorado's team group of five.
Freshmen Brenna Higgins and Ananthi Vivek will compete as individuals. For Vivek, it's her first competition since the Ram Classic in September.
"Being able to bring the whole team here to the tournament is a real blessing," Sheils said. "I'm excited to see how Ananthi and Brenna fare this week. They've both been working hard and we're thrilled to have them here."
The Causeway Invitational is a 54-hole tournament with the first two rounds on Monday and the final round on Tuesday. The tournament will feature a shotgun start both days, beginning at 9:30 a.m. MT.
Colorado will pair with UC Davis and Santa Clara for Monday's first 36 holes with the groupings beginning between the first and fourth holes. Higgins and Vivek will begin on the 16th with golfers from UC Davis and UC Riverside.
