Buffs Storming Into Thunderbird Intercollegiate

BOULDER — The No. 48-ranked Colorado women's golf team is back in action this week at the Thunderbird Intercollegiate hosted by Lorena Ochoa, Feb. 9-10, at the Tucson Country Club in Tucson, Ariz.
The Buffaloes are coming off a tie for 10th at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club. It wasn't the outcome Colorado was looking for after a record-breaking fall season, but it was an opportunity to shake the cobwebs off after a three-month layoff.
"We were excited to just have the rust knocked off and to go back to work in Boulder this week," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We worked on our short games a ton. I was really satisfied with a great week of chipping, putting and especially some wedge work. I think everyone is excited to get right back after it, and I expect us to compete hard this week."
Colorado will be one of 15 teams competing in the field at the Tucson Country Club, a par 72 layout expected to play in the 6,500-yard range, which would be on the longer end of the courses the Buffaloes have played this season. The Tucson CC is a little unique in that it's more of a parkland golf course than is typically seen in the region, with tree-lined fairways and rough, as opposed to going from fairway right into the desert.
Colorado will also see plenty of familiar competition as the Buffaloes prep for April's Big 12 Championship in Dallas. The Big 12 comprises nearly half the field with seven teams entered, headlined by the locals in No. 18 Arizona State and No. 20 and host Arizona. No. 20 Oklahoma State, which placed second at Guadalajara is one of a total of five top 25 teams in the field.
Four of five starters from Guadalajara make the trip once again for the Buffaloes. Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy was Colorado's low 54-hole scorer in Mexico, tying for 15th at 3-over, 219, recording her fourth top 20 finish of the season.
"Ellen did a lot of things well mentally in Mexico and learned a lot from that experience," Sheils said. "It's nice to be able for her to have that in her back pocket, being able to really trust herself, and just keep working on those same things."
O'Shaughnessy will be joined from the Guadalajara trip by Vanessa Ngo, Maya McVey, and Colorado's top fall performer in junior Carolyn Fuller.
Freshman Teemapat Pateetin will make her spring debut after a solid fall season where she ranked third on the team with a 73.50 stroke average. She had a pair of top 20 finishes in the fall and tied for the team lead with six rounds of even par or better.
"Teem is such a big part of our lineup," Sheils said. "I know that she's been working really hard on her game and she's so excited to get back into competition. We're really happy to have her here with us."
The 54-hole Thunderbird Intercollegiate will feature the first two rounds on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday. A shotgun start will be utilized both days, beginning at 8:30 a.m. MT.
For the first two rounds, Colorado will group with Big 12 rival Texas Tech, ranked No. 47 nationally, Grand Canyon and Seattle University. Those groups will begin on the back nine, between the 10th and 13th tees.
