Rivera’s Second Round In The 60’s Pacing The Buffaloes

PALO ALTO, Calif.  – The University of Colorado men's golf team inched up one spot into a tie for seventh here Friday after the completion of the second round of Stanford's "The Goodwin."

No. 24 Brigham Young and No. 35 flipped the script and took over the team lead with 12-under 548 totals, wrestling the lead from host and No. 23 Stanford, who is now tied for third with No. 31 Long Beach State, one back at 549.  No. 21 New Mexico rounds out the top five with a 550 score.

No. 44 Colorado is tied for seventh with No. 41 Northwestern and No.66 California with even-par team scores of 560, all two back of sixth-place and No. 67 Washington State.  The Buffaloes opened strong, starting on the 520-yard, par-5 1st hole and recording an eagle and two birdies, but were back to even four holes in and hung around that mark the remainder of the round.  CU finished with a 2-over 282 total for the round, tying for the 10th-best in the monster 30-team field, but were able to move up one spot in the standings.  There are 14 teams in the nation's top 50 competing here, with 23 in the top 100.

'Overall, the guys did a good job of competing and staying focused on their games, "CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Those are important to continue to do going forward.  And it was why we were in a good position for a good finish but just couldn't quite finish it off. We are still in a good position to shoot a low round tomorrow and see if we can't make some noise.  If we all come together and play well at the same time we can give the leaders something to look at coming down the stretch."

The four scorers for CU had all birdied the par-5 16th hole, but collectively finished with four pars, three bogeys and a double.

First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera continued to pace the Buffaloes here, as his 2-under par 68 has him tied for 13th with a 3-under 137 score after two rounds on the 6,742-yard, par-70 Stanford Golf Course.  He opened the day with four birdies and seven pars on his first 11 holes, extending his streak to 24 straight holes of par or better before he bogeyed No. 12 (which was the toughest Friday at +0.42 over par).  All in all, he had five birdies and 10 pars opposite three bogeys (eight, 23 and five, respectively through two rounds), and he played the par-3's and par-4's both even for the second straight day and the par-5's at 2-under.  He now has 20 rounds of par or better out of 28 since joining the Buffaloes last summer, and including the last two rounds he played in this event as a sophomore at USC, now has four straight scores in the 60's on Stanford's layout.

Junior Brandon Knight is tied for 28th after recording a second straight even-par 70 for a 140 total score; he jumped up 14 spots in the standings.   He tied for the team-high five birdies – after having the most (also five) in the first round; his second round numbers were identical to his first with nine pars, three bogeys and a double.   Overall, he's playing the par-5's at 2-under, the par-3's even and the par-4's at 2-over.  His 10 birdies are tied for the seventh-most in the field.

Junior Ty Holbrook is tied for 39th, posting a 1-over 71 for a 1-over 141 overall score through 26 holes.  He notched an eagle for the second straight on No. 1, his sixth of the season to take over the team lead.  His second time around the Stanford track was almost a carbon copy of his first, with an eagle, two birdies and a double bogey, with one less par (11) and more bogey (3) than on Thursday.  He is one of three players in the 160-man field with two eagles, and he's tied with two others in playing the par-5's the best at 7-under.

Senior Hunter Swanson carded a 3-over 73 for a 2-over 142 total that has him tied for 54th.  He got off to a tough start – double bogey, bogey – then birdied the 214-yard, par-3 3rd hole, one of just 12 birdies on the hole that played the second-toughest all day (+0.41 over par).  The double on No. 1, just his third all season, triggered a rollercoaster ride for his first seven holes, in which afterward he recorded all three birdies for his round, two bogeys and a par to get back down to 1-over; he then finished with nine pars and two bogeys.

Sophomore Parker Paxton is tied for 107th after a 3-over 73, pushing him to 7-over 147 heading into Saturday's final round.  He opened with a birdie on No. 1 and made the turn at 1-under, but bogeyed four of the first five holes on the back nine that led to eventual 73.  He had four birdies and seven pars opposite seven bogeys on the day, as he birdied all three par-5's but bogeyed four of the five par-3's.

Long Beach State's Alejandro De Castro assumed the individual lead after recording a 6-under 64 for a 9-under 131 total, good for a one stroke lead over two others.  He is looking to win his second straight tournament after a runner-up finish that preceded it..

The third and final round is Saturday, Colorado's quintet teeing off in 12-minute intervals starting at 8 a.m. MDT, and will be paired with No. 21 New Mexico, No. 41 Northwestern (for the third straight round) and No. 67 Washington State.

ALUMNI WATCH: Jeremy Paul ('17) is tied for 64th, making the cut with a 68-71—139 (5-under) scorecard in the Korn Ferry Tour's Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club.
