Buffs Move Into 13th At Big 12 Championship

April 24, 2026 | Women's Golf

DALLAS — Colorado moved up one spot into 13th place after the second round of the 2026 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, played Friday at the Dallas Athletic Club Gold Course.

The 47th-ranked Buffaloes are 31-over-par through 36 holes, enjoying a nine-stroke improvement from Thursday's opening round. Colorado shot 11-over in Friday's second round, leaping past No. 38 Kansas State into the 13th spot. The Wildcats were 19-over on the day, dropping to 36-over for the championship.

No. 36 Houston holds the second-round lead and is the only team in the red for the tournament at 4-under. The Cougars have a four-shot lead over No. 15 UCF, with a 36-hole score of even-par. No. 25 Iowa State is third at 2-over with No. 22 Arizona State in fourth at 5-over.

The day didn't start out great for Colorado. Beginning on the front, the Buffaloes were 15-over through nine. Colorado didn't have the volume of double-bogeys, or worse, that it did during the first round, but still struggled to put scoring holes together, recording just two birdies – both by junior Carolyn Fuller – on the front.

"I will say holes one through six are the hardest stretch of the course, and I think we wanted to make something happen early but it's a part of the course where you really have to stay patient," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "And we didn't do that. We let some frustration and execution errors turn into a couple more shots, from one bogey or bad shot into several."

That all changed at the turn. Colorado's four scoring golfers played the 10th through 13th holes flawlessly. The Buffaloes made up seven strokes on that four-hole stretch, recording seven birdies and no holes of bogey or worse.

Colorado finished 4-under on the back, dropping a few strokes at the end; still, it was a drastic improvement. The three-hole stretch from the 16th to the 18th that the Buffaloes' four scoring golfers shot at 8-over in the first round dipped to 2-over on Friday.

"It was good to see them play like themselves starting on the back nine," Sheils said. "But as we talked about, we're counting all 18, so we need to find a way to be ready from hole No. 1, not hole No. 10. But at least it was good to see them playing like themselves."

Fuller had Colorado's best round of the day, shooting 1-over, 73. She was 1-under through five thanks to a birdie at the 404-yard, par-4 fourth. Fuller then endured her lone rough patch of the day at the tail end of the front, dropping back to 1-over through nine. She steadied from there, playing the back nine at even and is tied for 44th overall at 8-over.

Junior Maya McVey joins Fuller in the 44th position at 8-over after shooting a 77 on Friday. McVey was 4-over through four, but then had a solid stretch over the next 10 holes, shooting par eight times and making birdies on a pair of par 5s at the 11th and 13th before dropping back to 5-over for the day.

Vanessa Ngo had a good bounce-back day with a 74, a nine-stroke improvement from her first round. Ngo was 3-over through six, but played the final 12 holes at 1-under with birdies at the 10th and 12th. She is tied for 60th at 13-over.

Freshman Teemapat Pateetin finished with a 75 in the second round and is tied for 56th overall at 11-over for the championship. Pateetin had the biggest swing between the front and back on the day. She was 7-over through nine, but had a near-perfect back side, shaving off four strokes with four birdies and five pars.

Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy is in 66th place at 18-over.

Oklahoma State's Ellie Bushnell and Arizona State's Patience Rhodes are tied for the lead heading into Saturday's final round at 4-under.

Colorado will once again pair with Kansas State for Saturday's third round, with those groupings teeing off the back beginning at 7:20 a.m. MT, a starting point the Buffaloes will look to take advantage of.

"All the more reason we need to be ready from the get-go," Sheils said. "We need to be ready to make some birdies and take advantage of the easier half of the course right away. Then, we should be warmed up and ready to take on the harder part of the course when we make the turn."
