Tyson Gilbert Named Men's Basketball Assistant Coach
May 13, 2026 | Men's Basketball
BOULDER – Tyson Gilbert has been named an assistant coach/quality control analyst for the Colorado men's basketball team, head coach Tad Boyle announced on Wednesday.
Gilbert, a graduate assistant for the Buffaloes the last two seasons, joins the Colorado staff after former associate head coach Mike Rohn left in April for a position with the Kansas City basketball program.
"These past two years I've learned a ton and have been able to just grow as a coach and more importantly as a person," Gilbert said. "I'd like to thank coach Boyle and the entire staff for allowing me to grow. I'm extremely excited for the future in this role."
Gilbert quickly ascended into a leadership role with the Buffaloes, assisting in all facets of the program, including compiling information for scouting reports, working with the players in practice drills and helping to manage Colorado's crew of student managers.
"This whole business is about relationships," Gilbert said. "I just try to learn from everybody I encounter, try to learn from everything. Coach Boyle has a quote, 'When you're done learning, you're through.' So, the last couple of years, I've tried to dive into player development, learning what it takes to be successful at this level of coaching, working hard, and grinding. The whole staff is full of guys who sacrifice a lot and work extremely hard."
But most importantly, just two years removed from his own collegiate playing career, Gilbert is an assistant coach the current players can relate to.
"Tyson has a very unique ability to connect with our players, and our players really respond to him," Boyle said. "Obviously, he's young and can speak their language, so to speak. He's from their era, and he's a guy who's got great energy and just has an infectious personality. He's a guy that you enjoy being around."
Boyle referenced the last time he hired from within, which has worked out extremely well for the Buffaloes. Strength coach Steve Englehart was already on CU's strength & conditioning staff, working with other programs in 2016, when he was needed on an interim basis for the men's basketball team that summer. He quickly built a strong rapport with the team and has become a valuable asset to the Buffaloes over the past decade.
Boyle sees the same traits in Gilbert.
"Sometimes the best people for the job are right under your nose and in your own ranks," Boyle said. "He's mature beyond his years, so he can deal with adults and handle himself in recruiting circles and recruiting conversations, yet, he's young enough to really connect and identify with our players, and so he's going to be a really, really good coach."
A native of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Gilbert was a successful collegiate player. He averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists over a four-year career split between NCAA Division II CSU Pueblo and Alaska Anchorage. As a senior at Alaska Anchorage in 2023-24, Gilbert was a First Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference selection, guiding the Seawolves to a 22-11 record and an NCAA Tournament bid.
Gilbert graduated from Alaska Anchorage in 2023 with his degree in Journalism & Public Communications. He was a two-time GNAC All-Academic Team member and a CSC Academic All-District selection as a senior. Gilbert was the 2023-24 UAA Athlete of the Year and received the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame's 2024 Trajan Langdon Award for leadership, integrity and sportsmanship.
Gilbert appeared in 56 games for CSU Pueblo from 2018-20, averaging 9.3 points and 2.0 assists per game. He transferred to Alaska Anchorage following the 2019-20 season, but it took him two years to see the floor due to a combination of health and injury issues.
A 2018 graduate of Rock Canyon High School, Gilbert was a four-year starter and a three-time All-Continental League pick for the Jaguars. He was an All-South Metro pick as a senior, averaging 15.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
