Buffs Open Big 12 Championships with Three Medalists

TUCSON, Ariz. – Colorado track and field opened competition Thursday at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships with three medalists at Drachman Stadium.

Abbey Nechanicky highlighted the night for the Buffs, placing fourth in the women's 10k with a gritty effort against one of the nation's top fields. Nechanicky led the race for nearly 9k before finishing fourth in 34:26.16 to earn all-conference honors.
Colorado also found success in the javelin, where both Gustavo Alfonso and Alaina Fantaski earned podium finishes. Alfonso placed seventh in the men's competition with a throw of 63.46 meters, while Fantaski recorded a huge personal best of 47.01 meters to place eighth in the women's event.
On the track, Danny Tragarz cruised through the preliminary round of the men's 400-meter hurdles, running 50.08 to place second overall and advance to Saturday's final.
Ashley Jones narrowly missed the podium in the women's 10k, placing ninth in 34:49.48, while Dean Casey finished 10th in the men's 10k with a time of 29:58.90.
Colorado continues competition Friday beginning at 7:10 p.m. MT with the men's 800-meter preliminaries.
