Buffs' First Road Match Ends In A Draw

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Colorado Buffaloes soccer team played Western Michigan to a scoreless draw on Thursday at the WMU Soccer Complex in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This marks the team's first draw in the 2026 season. The Buffs are now 3-0-1 on the season as they shift their focus towards Michigan State.
The first-ever meeting between the two programs resulted in a hard-fought tie, with Colorado outshooting the Broncos 12-8. Seven of CU's shots were on goal, compared to Western Michigan's three.
"I thought we played really well for long stretches," head coach Danny Sanchez said. "We needed to find an early goal. Unfortunately, we weren't able to do that. Credit Western Michigan. I thought they played really well and defended really well and just really limited our quality opportunities."
Goalkeepers Brooke Goerish and Jamie Campbell again split time between the posts, with Goerish making her first collegiate start and recording two saves, while Campbell, who played the second half, recorded the match's crucial save in the final seconds following a WMU corner kick, securing the draw for the Black and Gold.
"Jamie makes that save with two, three seconds to go, and it easily could have been a loss," Sanchez said. "I thought both goalkeepers played well and weren't under a lot of pressure, but dealt with what they needed to. Obviously, Jamie's save at the end was key for us to walk away with a draw."
How It Happened
The match kicked into action at WMU Soccer Complex at 2 p.m.
Forward Hope Leyba hit the ground running in the first half, recording two high-threat shots in the box early, which forced a save by the Broncos.
The Buffs kept charging into Western Michigan's box throughout the first half. Midfielder Lexi Meyer smashed a ball into the crossbar as the team kept creating chances on offense.
Goalkeeper Brooke Goerish recorded two crucial saves for the Black and Gold in the first half.
The Broncos started gaining some offensive momentum towards the end of the first period. Their best chance came off a free-kick set piece in the 42nd minute, as Reagan Sulaver's shot in the box was blocked by Colorado defender Lillie Quinlivan Coulson.
Though the Buffaloes created more chances at goal, outshooting Western Michigan six to three, the first half ended nil-nil.
In the second half, the Buffaloes kept piling on the pressure. Colorado recorded three shots through 20 minutes of the second period, including a Hope Leyba header in the box in the 67th minute.
Forward Michaela McGowan recorded one of the Buffs' most significant chances of the match, shooting from just outside the box, sailing over the crossbar.
With 10 minutes left in the game, the Broncos took a shot in the box following an inswinging corner kick. The ball came inches from crossing the goal line, but goalkeeper Jamie Campbell scooped it just in time.
In the final 15 seconds, Western Michigan's corner kick was headed into the bottom right corner of the net, but Campbell made a miraculous save to secure the 0-0 draw for Colorado.
