No. 13 Buffs Visit No. 25 Texas Tech

BOULDER – No. 13 Colorado takes its unbeaten start to Big 12 play on the road Sunday, Sept. 27, visiting No. 25 Texas Tech for a ranked matchup at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for noon MT, with the match televised nationally on ESPNU.

The Buffaloes (8-1-1, 2-0-0 Big 12) will pursue their sixth consecutive victory against an unbeaten Texas Tech squad (5-0-4, 1-0-1 Big 12). Colorado enters tied with Houston at the top of the conference standings with six points, while the Red Raiders sit two points behind.

After defeating No. 10 West Virginia at home Thursday, Colorado faces a quick turnaround before taking on another ranked opponent in Lubbock. For the Buffs, the challenge is carrying that confidence into a demanding road environment.

"We're going to have to play well, and we're going to have to keep our composure and deal with some adversity," head coach Danny Sanchez said when asked about the turnaround.

Texas Tech brings a 14-match unbeaten streak into Sunday, with its last loss coming in Colorado's 3-0 victory in Boulder last October. The Red Raiders are 4-0-1 at home this season and unbeaten in their last 16 matches at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Tech has averaged 2,568 fans through five home matches this year.

Forward Taylor Zdrojewski leads the Red Raiders with six goals and 13 points, accounting for nearly half of the team's 14 goals. She also leads Tech with 29 shots and 15 shots on goal and has scored in each of its first two conference matches. Kaitlyn Giametta provides another threat with three goals, including the game-winning penalty kick against Cincinnati on Thursday. Together, the two forwards have scored nine of Tech's 14 goals.

Colorado's challenge will include limiting the service those forwards receive. Defender Kylie Bahr leads Texas Tech with four assists and has added a goal. Against Cincinnati, Bahr combined with midfielder Emma Torres to set up Zdrojewski's second-half finish, showing the danger Tech can create through supporting runs into the attack.

The Red Raiders have also been productive before halftime, outscoring opponents 10-1 in first halves this season. That margin underscores the importance of a composed start for Colorado as it tries to prevent Tech from establishing an early advantage at home.

At the other end, goalkeeper Addie Todd has played all 810 minutes for Texas Tech, recording five shutouts, 28 saves, a 0.56 goals-against average and a .848 save percentage. The Red Raiders have held eight of their nine opponents to one goal or fewer and allow just eight shots per match, putting a premium on the quality of Colorado's chances.

Tech opened its conference schedule with a 2-2 draw at UCF before defeating Cincinnati 2-0. Colorado holds a 12-3-2 advantage in the all-time series, including a 5-2-2 record in Lubbock. The teams played to a 1-1 draw during the Buffs' last visit in 2024.

BUFFS BRING MOMENTUM TO LUBBOCK

Colorado will look to carry its own defensive consistency onto the road after outscoring opponents 14-0 during its five-match winning streak. The Buffs have recorded seven shutouts through 10 matches, including each of their last five.

Freshman goalkeeper Brooke Goerish enters Sunday with a 0.28 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. She has allowed two goals in more than 636 minutes, crediting the players in front of her for helping establish the team's defensive standard.

"It's written up on the locker room board: 'No goals.' That's the goal every time," Goerish said.

Colorado brings multiple scoring threats to test Todd and the Red Raiders' defense. Reagan Kotschau leads the Buffs with 20 points on seven goals and six assists, already matching her totals in all three categories from last season. Hope Leyba shares the team lead with seven goals, while Michaela McGowan has added five goals and 11 points.

Leyba will have a chance to claim sole possession of third on Colorado's career goals list Sunday. Her spectacular volley against West Virginia brought her total to 39, tying Taylor Kornieck. She also sits three goals behind Nikki Marshall's second-place mark of 42.

"Honestly, I just knew I had to shoot it," Leyba said of the finish. "We've been practicing volleys a little bit at practice, and I was making some."

The Buffs have another attacking option available with Jace Holley back in the rotation. After making her season debut Thursday, the returning 12-goal scorer will continue working toward match fitness as Colorado moves deeper into its conference schedule.

Sunday marks the second of four consecutive matches against opponents ranked in this week's United Soccer Coaches poll. Colorado visits No. 23 UCF on Oct. 2 before returning to Prentup Field to host No. 11 Baylor on Oct. 8.
