Tessa Mendoza was named the Assistant Director of Developmental Science Data Analytics for the Crawford Family WHOLE™ Student-Athlete Program in May 2023 after serving as an Assistant Sports Scientist for men’s basketball the previous year.
In her role, Mendoza leads department-wide efforts to maximize student-athlete wellness, health, and performance through data informed, evidence-based sports science practices.
Mendoza came to Colorado from Iowa State, where she served as the football program’s first sports science intern. Her responsibilities included GPS technology operations and overseeing data management for the Cyclone’s Strength and Conditioning department. During her time in Ames, the football program saw a drastic increase in metric-based management for injury prevention and rehabilitation, which contributed to some of the most successful years in program history.
She graduated from Iowa State in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Health and a post-graduate certificate degree in Computing Applications. While at Iowa State, she was named an American Kinesiology Association National Scholar and published multiple research papers in areas of neuroscience, sport-related concussion, and athlete performance.
Mendoza is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Additionally, she has several years of experience as an assistant coach for both indoor and outdoor junior club volleyball programs.
A native of Grimes, Iowa, she attended Dowling Catholic High School (West Des Moines, Iowa), where she was a four-year volleyball letter winner. Her hobbies include reading, pottery, baking, and traveling.
