Buffs Fall to No. 2 Stanford

October 24, 2019 | Soccer

Colorado hosts California on Sunday

BOULDER – No. 2 Stanford showed why they are the class of the Pac-12 on Thursday, handing Colorado a 4-0 defeat at Prentup Field.

Colorado (10-5-1, 2-4-1) was able to keep within reach of the Cardinal, allowing only one goal in the first half. Stanford (14-1-0, 7-0-0) navigated the second half with three more goals, extending its shutout streak to six consecutive matches.

Senior Jalen Tompkins made eight saves on the day. She also registered CU's lone shot on goal.

How it happened
Stanford got on the scoreboard in the 11th minute. The goal was set up by a Tompkins foul inside the goal box, drawing an automatic penalty kick. Stanford's Catarina Macario stepped up to the spot and converted her third penalty kick of the season.

The Buffaloes' defense did a good job of keeping Stanford at bay the rest of the half. The Cardinal outshot the Buffs 12-4 in the half but had only five of those shots on net. Tompkins did a good job shaking off the penalty and made a diving save in the 27th minute.

Minutes later, Tompkins helped set up one of the best scoring chances of the day for the Buffs. Colorado was awarded a free-kick just off midfield in the 29th minute. Tompkins ran up and served the ball perfectly onto Taylor Kornieck. The header chance went just over the corner of the net from 10 yards out.

Tompkins got in on the offense again in the 33rd minute. She picked up her first-career shot on goal putting a free kick attempt on net from 45 yards out. Stanford played the ball out, but the Buffs won back possession in the Cardinal zone. Senior Kelsey Aaknes directed a shot towards net that was deflected out by Stanford, giving Colorado its only corner kick of the first half.

Stanford picked up the offense in the second half, totaling seven more shots on goal in the final 45 minutes. The Cardinal put the game away in the 66th minute, getting the 2-0 off the foot of Madison Haley. Goals from Beattie Goad and Jojo Harber rounded out the afternoon.

Quotes
Head coach
Danny Sanchez
On sticking to the game plan
"I thought, for the most part, we did stick the game plan. We got a little unfortunate with kind of deflections of balls to their best player [Macario]. I thought J [Tompkins] did a really good job dealing with most of the match. But sometimes when teams get that early goal they relax and I thought to a certain extent that off that we played well. The second goal was off our set-piece and we got countered and I think that kind of killed the game. Overall, we're going to choose to take positives from it and this is a good team. We competed, we stuck the game plan and it wasn't our day so we got to read it for Cal on Sunday."

On Stanford's defense
"First of all, they have quality. They have quality in the back. Second of all, they have the ball most the time. So, when you're not defending as much it makes it a little bit easier, but that's not to take anything away. Their outside backs get forward. The center backs are rock solid their goalkeeper deals with what she needs to deal with. I think it's just the nature of how they play and the fact they have the ball. When they have the ball it's tough for the other team to score."

On Jade Babcock-Chi
"She's been playing well so we thought we'd try something different. I thought Jade did a good job. She dealt with her [Macario] and it's a little bit of a thankless job. I think for the most part she did well."

On planning against a team like Stanford
"You try to neutralize their dangerous players. You try to take away what they want to do. It's easy to do it on paper but it's difficult to do it over 90 minutes. I thought for probably for 70 minutes we did a decent job with it. When they punish you there are no second chances. When they get into dangerous spots, they typically punish you."
