Buffs, Golden Bears Draw in Home Finale

October 27, 2019 | Soccer

Colorado and Cal play to a 1-1 finish

BOULDER – Winter was in full effect in the Colorado Buffaloes' home finale at Prentup Field on Sunday. The Buffs and California Golden Bears played to a 1-1 draw in snow and below-freezing temperatures.

The afternoon began with a celebration of Colorado's six seniors. Fittingly enough, it was senior Taylor Kornieck who notched the Buffs' lone goal. The score was her 10th of the season and 37th of her career.

Fellow senior, Jalen Tompkins made eight saves in the full 110 minutes.

The draw puts Colorado at 10-5-2 overall this season and 2-4-2 in the Pac-12. California now sits at 11-3-3 and 3-2-3 in the conference.

How it happened
Senior Camilla Shymka got the game's first scoring chance in the 6th minute. She put a hard right-footer on net that forced Cal's Angelina Anderson to make a leaping save, tipping the ball over the crossbar.

Kornieck's goal came on the Buffs' second shot of the afternoon. She dribbled in from the left corner and positioned herself just off the end-line. She threw an odd-angle shot on net and slipped it past Anderson right at the 14-minute mark, giving CU the 1-0 advantage.

The Buffs kept pushing in the half, getting header-chances from Tessa Barton and Libby Geraghty. Tompkins made three saves in the half to keep Cal off the board.

Cal was the aggressor in the second half, doubling up Colorado 10-5 in shots. The Golden Bears got on the board in 67th minute when Emma Westin found the left corner, beating a diving Tompkins to bring Cal back to even.

Colorado had one last push in the final minutes of the regulation. The Buffs got a late corner kick in the 86th minute. Senior Stephanie Zuniga served the ball into Barton, who headed the ball into the net. The goal was not allowed and instead, Shymka picked up a yellow card.

Sophomore Kayleigh Webb opened the first OT with a blast from 28 yards out, forcing Anderson to make a save at the upper left corner. Kornieck had a hard shot that was blocked in the second overtime, drawing calls for a handball. The officials did not agree, awarding a yellow card to the CU bench.

The Buffs outshot Cal 7-4 in the two overtime periods, but neither side could net the winner.

Up Next: Colorado hits the road for the final three matches of the regular season. The Buffs will visit Washington on Thursday and Washington State on Sunday. The team closes the season on the road at Utah (Nov. 7).

Notes: Kornieck is now one goal shy of matching her career-high of 11 set in her freshman season…She now trails Nikki Marshall (42) by five goals for CU's all-time lead…Kornieck now has 25 points this season (10 G, 5 A)…Webb (San Marcos, Calif.) and Sofia Weiner (Evergreen, Colo.) were the only two players not wearing long sleeves in the sub-freezing temperatures.

Overall thoughts
"As far as the match, I thought we started well. Taylor [Kornieck] scored a great goal early, but I think we started dropping a little too much and they got the equalizer. It was a good goal, but having said that, I'm really pleased with how we responded. I felt, towards the end of the game and the overtime periods, there was one team pushing for the win and unfortunately, we weren't able to get it. But Cal is a very good team, so this is a good result for us as we head out to Washington next week."

On the fans
"First of all, starting with the senior dinner last night, we have six fantastic seniors. I'm super proud of them and all that they've done. Hopefully, if we can take care of business, maybe we can get another game here [Prentup Field] in the tournament. But for the supporters that came out today, on a blustery October day, we are appreciative of what they brought today. They brought the energy, even though the crowd wasn't huge, it was a great atmosphere and it was a great college soccer game."

On heading into the last three games of the season
"I thought we played really well today, in stretches and tough conditions. Cal is a good team, they've already beaten USC, UCLA, and Santa Clara, so they have great results. We're going to take the positives from this and get ready to go to Washington and Washington State, which are two top-20 RPI teams. There's a lot of great opportunities for us ahead, but we do know how tough it is on the road. We're excited to get to the Pacific Northwest and to see what happens."
