Buffs Fall to Huskies

Colorado dropped Sunday's contest with Washington 4-1
SEATTLE, Wash -Â The Colorado Buffaloes closed the weekend with a 4-1 loss to Wash at Husky Soccer Stadium on Sunday.
Colorado (6-3-3, 0-2-1) found one goal off the left foot of Kayleigh Webb in the 81st minute while Washington (8-1-2, 2-1) scored two in each half.Â
The Huskies led in the shot category 21-16 and had nine shots on goal compared to just four for the Buffs.Â
The Buffs developed some chances throughout the match but could not do enough to get back into the game. The Huskies held a 2-0 advantage at intermission and tacked on a third midway through the second half. The Buffs responded and took a goal back late, but UW was able to score a fourth and put the game away just minutes later.Â
"I thought we started well,'' said head coach Danny Sanchez. "It was a little unfortunate with the first goal but I felt like we were playing alright. The goal right before halftime was a bit of a morale breaker. I thought we started the second half alright but then when they got a third goal that was kind of it. I am proud of how we battled, though. Kayleigh [Webb] scored a nice goal and I felt the players off the bench gave us some energy. But it's a disappointing result. All we can do is regroup and get ready for next week."
Colorado keeper Dani Hansen finished with five saves while Washington's Olivia Sekany recorded three of her own.Â
How it happened:
The Huskies quickly got the scoring going with a goal in the 10th minute. Former Buff, Kyla Ferry, flicked a ball behind CU's backline where Mckenzie Weinert was there to tap it in.
The match was tightly contested after that, with both sides moving the ball well and developing some chances. But the Huskies were able to build on their lead in the 40th minute when Summer Yates scored a rebound shot off a save from Hansen.Â
In the second half, UW came out hot and in the 69th minute Kelsey Branton rolled a ball past Hansen to make it 3-0.Â
Colorado got a goal back in the 81st minute as Webb curled in a left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard-box into the right side netting off assists from Emerson Layne and Civana Kuhlmann.Â
The Buffs had some momentum building, but the Huskies quickly put the game away with a header from Cori Sullivan just two minutes later. Â
Colorado looked like they were going to find their second in the waning moments of the match, but could not convert on a penalty kick in the waning moments.
"We have to be better in the back," said Sanchez. "We have to be tighter. We also have to be better going forward because that'll take pressure off the backline. It's a collective effort and today just wasn't good enough."
Up Next:
The Buffs return to Prentup Field next week where they will face Oregon State on Thursday at 3 p.m. and Oregon on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
Notes: Colorado kept its season-long goal-scoring streak alive, now at 12…Webb's goal was her fifth of the season…Kuhlmann is now tied with Shyra James for the team lead in points (21)…The Buffs have now totaled 102 points this season, marking the most since the team's 148 in 2018.
