Colorado Eyes Redemption Against TCU

November 01, 2024 | Soccer

The Buffs and No. 7 Horned Frogs set for second meeting of the season

KANSAS CITY – Colorado soccer knew what was in store for itself if the Buffaloes were to advance to the second round of the Sports Farmers Market Big 12 Soccer Championship. The No. 9 seeded Buffs downed the eight-seeded Utah Utes on Wednesday, earning a shot at redemption against top-seeded and No. 7 ranked TCU on Saturday.

Kickoff at CPKC Stadium, like Wednesday, has been moved up to 10:45 a.m. MT (ESPN+) to avoid the inclement weather forecasted for Saturday in Kansas City.

Colorado (11-3-5) earned the chance to take on the Horned Frogs after its come-from-behind 2-1 win against the Utes. Hope Leyba and Ava Priest scored the Buffs' goals, snapping a scoring drought of nearly 450 minutes.

The Buffs and TCU clashed in Boulder on Oct. 5. Colorado, then ranked No. 14 in the nation, was on a 10-game unbeaten streak. Emerson Layne started the match off quickly for the Buffs, getting the game's first goal in the second minute.

From that point on, it was all TCU the rest of the day as the match ended in a lopsided 6-1 decision for the Horned Frogs.

"They're [TCU] winners of the league for a reason," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the win over Utah. "They have the Coach of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and about 10 all-conference selections. They're deservedly a top team in the league this year. But when you get in these situations, one game knockout match, anything can happen, and we have to believe and continue to fight. But we're going to have to play our best match on Saturday."

The loss to TCU dominoed the Buffs to a 0-2-4 end to the regular season, dropping CU out of contention for a first-round bye this week. Colorado's defensive efforts kept the Buffs afloat with three shutouts in the streak but totaled just one goal in the last six matches.

Despite the struggles down the stretch, Colorado remained positive, hoping for a chance at redemption.

"I think it says a lot about our team," Priest noted. "I think we've been through a lot of adversity recently. This really showed that we can come together. All of us have fight in us, and all of us are going to fight to the very end in every single game."

Wednesday's win was CU's first Big 12 Championship win since beating Nebraska in the opening round in 2008. CU is now 7-9-5 all-time in the Big 12 Tournament.

TCU (14-2-2) catapulted up the rankings since the two teams last met. The Horned Frogs come into Kansas City as the Big 12 regular season champions on a 12-match unbeaten streak.

Saturday's winner will advance to take on the winner of BYU vs Oklahoma State on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
