Colorado picks up its second top-10 win of the season
BOULDER — No. 22 Colorado took down No. 5 Texas Tech 3-0 on Thursday at Prentup Field, tying the highest-ranked win in program history and marking just the second top-5 win in the Buffaloes' 30 seasons.
Colorado (12-2-3, 6-1-2) handed the Lady Raiders its first conference loss of the season, gaining ground in the Big 12 standings and pulling even with TTU with 20 points in Big 12 play.
Joran Nytes recorded a season-high 10 saves in her sixth clean sheet of the season. The shutout for Nytes marks her 25th as a Buff, pulling her into a three-way tie for the program record with Jessica Keller and Jalen Tompkins.
Ava Priest opened the scoring, notching the game-winner in the 12th minute, and Hope Leyba recorded two more goals to bring her season total to 17. Leyba's two-goal effort was her fifth multi-goal game of the season, and she's now tied with Nikki Marshall for the single-season goal record at CU, with two more regular-season matches to play.
"I think it started in the pregame, we were super focused," head coach Danny Sanchez said after the win. "I was almost worried they were too tight, but I think they were just really focused. You don't get records if you're not a great team and you don't have great teammates."
Colorado was outshot by Texas Tech, 23-12, and trailed in shots on goal 10-7. The Lady Raiders also held the decisive advantage in corner kick attempts, 9-1.
"It doesn't matter how great a goalkeeper you are; you're not going to get a shutout if you don't have a defense in front of you, and our back four were fantastic tonight," Sanchez added. "Jordi had to make a couple of saves, which she always does, but really, the shots were from distance. Then, Hope, going forward, you know, dangerous, probably a little disappointed to not have that one [off the post] in the first half, but I thought she was fantastic."
How it Happened
The match opened with the two sides trading opening shots, with both keepers getting into the action early. Shortly after, the Buffs capitalized offensively when Priest scored in the 12th minute from the top of the 18-yard box off a feed from Jace Holley.
The Buffaloes doubled their lead in the 15th minute with Leyba's first goal of the match on a header that deflected off a TTU defender on its way into the net.
Nytes made three more saves in the opening half to keep the 2-0 lead intact.
"Coming off the road and a long six-day trip with a tough tie [at BYU], it was really important for us to come together and stay positive this week in practice. The energy before the game in the locker room, you could just feel it. Everybody was just super pumped up to play a really good team. We needed that win tonight. I think all of us are just feeling super good and the confidence is definitely just going to keep building."
The second period began with the Buffs holding firm against Texas Tech's attempts to close the gap. Nytes made a key save early on to deny Alana Harry, maintaining the home team's momentum.
The Buffaloes capitalized with Leyba finding the net in the 63rd minute, slotting the pass from Reagan Kotschau into the near corner to extend the lead to 3-0.
Texas Tech threw everything forward the rest of the night, outshooting Cu 9-5 in the half. Nytes made six more saves in the frame to secure the clean sheet.
"It's an incredible feeling," Nytes said about moving into a share for the record. "I can't take all the credit myself. Shutouts come from the whole team and I'm just so proud of every single person. Like, it's awesome being able to tie the record, but there's more work to do, and hopefully that's what we can do the rest of the season."

Quotes
Junior Hope Leyba
On tying the single-season scoring record: "First of all, all glory is to God. Second of all, it's just gonna mean everything. It's going to show all my hard work, and it's gonna show the hard work of my teammates and that's just what I'm excited about. Showing what we've put in."
On beating the No. 5 team: "It's really important, and it was probably one of the best games we've ever played. We all put in the work to win. It shows a lot."
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On the atmosphere: "I think we had a great crowd again. The fans have been fantastic. The drumline coming out, it was just fantastic. You want to feed off that energy and being at altitude. You always want to play on the front foot at home. We always want to play a tempo. I thought they really bought into that. We wanted to get going before Texas Tech could set up defensively, because they're so organized. I thought we did a good job of that.
On the shutout: "You have to in this league and more importantly, just limiting the quality opportunities. Goals are going to happen, but especially tonight, against a team like this that is so dangerous going forward. It was a great performance by the backs and Vivi in front of the backs was fantastic, as always."
