Fuller Cards 65, Buffs In Second At Ron Moore

October 03, 2025 | Women's Golf

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – Carolyn Fuller had just polished off a career-best 65 during a downpour at the Ram Classic and was a couple of holes into the final round before it was called off. She was feeling great and, despite the rainout, wished she could have kept on playing.

No worries, she just had to wait 10 days to do it all over again.

The Colorado junior carded her second-straight 7-under-par 65 to capture a share of the first round lead at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate, Friday at the University of Denver Golf Course.

Fuller's 65 helped propel the Buffaloes to a 12-under round of 271, the third-best 18-hole team score in program history. Colorado is in second place, five shots behind Vanderbilt, ranked No. 7 in the latest Division I Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll. Texas State and Clemson are tied for third at 5-under.

Fuller was nearly flawless, finishing with eight birdies and only one bogey, which came early at the par-3 fifth. She immediately got that stroke back with a birdie at the par-4 sixth and finished the front nine at 2-under. Fuller took off from there with five more birdies on the back nine, including the last two and three of the last four holes.

"The mental stuff I've handled better," Fuller said. "I felt really relaxed. My tendency in the past, when I start to go under par, is to get ahead of myself and move quicker. Coach Maddie (Sheils) always reminds me to walk a little slower and stay present, and that really helps because I can't jump the gun over 18 holes, it's not a race. So, being in the moment and taking shots as they came, not trying to get too far ahead of myself."

Fuller, who is tied for the lead with Vanderbilt's Lynn Lim, is the first Buffalo to shoot 65 or better twice in the same season, let alone in back-to-back rounds. Only Esther Lee (2014-17) has multiple rounds of 65 or better in team history.

"This is a testament to the time and effort that she has put into improving every single part of her game, so all the credit to Carolyn," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "She had a tough (first) round last week at CSU (a 78), but learned from it and that's all we can ask. I'm proud she learned from that, and not only bounced back that day, but learned what she needs to do to get off to a better start in tournaments."

While Fuller was the headliner, it was a great day all around for the Buffaloes who had four of six golfers shoot under par rounds. Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy, playing as an individual, had a career-low 6-under 66 and is tied for third, just one shot off the lead. Junior Maya McVey is tied for eighth with a round of 4-under 68. Freshman Teemapat Pateetin had the best round of her young collegiate career and is tied for 13th at 2-under, 70.

"Overall, a lot of solid golf," Sheils said. "I was really proud of their patience today."

Colorado wasn't without its moments of adversity. The Buffaloes had a few hiccups in a tough stretch between the fourth and ninth holes, but still managed to play the front at even par. Colorado dusted off the front and played lights out on the back. The four scoring golfers played 12-under on the back with an impressive stretch at the finish, with nine birdies and no score bigger than par over the final four holes.

"I was happy to see that finish," Sheils said. "There's a very tough stretch of holes there on the front from four to eight. We had some mistakes but we can strategize and clean up on those holes for the next two days. I was proud of their patience; they bounced back and played great golf from there."

Not to be outdone, O'Shaughnessy knocked three strokes off her previous collegiate low 18 to sit just one shot off the lead. O'Shaughnessy had seven birdies and suffered just one bogey, at her second-to-last hole on the par-4 eighth. She took that stroke right back, though, at the par-5 ninth.

O'Shaughnessy credited her success to the approach shots as she hit 17 of 18 greens in regulation.

"It was as an awesome round," O'Shaughnessy said. "My approach shots were on today, I was able to leave myself really good looks for birdie."

McVey recorded her second round in the 60s as a Buff. She was even through 10, but finished strong with birdies on four of her final eight holes, and like her teammate Fuller, three of those came between the 15th and 18th.

Vanessa Ngo is tied for 33rd after a round of 1-over 73. Brenna Higgins is tied for 53rd after shooting 3-over 75.

Colorado will pair with Vanderbilt and Texas State in Saturday's second round as those groups begin from the first tee at 10:20 a.m.
