
Underclassmen Lead the Way as Buffs Impress in Season Opener at Caprioglio Invitational

PUEBLO — Colorado's underclassmen showed up and showed out with a strong performance at the Dr. Dan Caprioglio Invitational, led by Myla Wilkes, AJ Glavicic, and Helen Carlson.
A total of 27 Buffs saw action over the two-day meet, with eight athletes making their collegiate outdoor debut.
Men's Highlights
CU's Ames Newman recorded another personal best, tossing 14.35 meters in the hammer throw, surpassing the 14-meter mark for the first time since March 31, 2023, when he threw 14.12m.
Lucas Williams recorded a mark of 46.30m in the discus, just two meters shy of his personal best.
In the 1,500-meter run, Tyler Scholl finished in 4:09.07, just two seconds off his PR.
John Bass made his outdoor debut as a Buff, running 15.55 in the 110-meter hurdles and 10.96 in the 100 meters. Fellow newcomer Marco Martinez clocked 17.20 in the 110mH and 11.66 in the 100m.
AJ Glavicic, also competing in his first collegiate outdoor meet, won the 400 meters in 47.69 seconds. Teammate Nick Gehring finished in the top three with an identical time of 47.69.
In the 100 meters, Joshua Johnson turned in a top-10 performance with a time of 10.70, two-tenths off his personal best. Johnny Homsey ran a PR of 10.72 to open his outdoor season, while Cade Vanhout posted a time of 10.80, four-tenths off his PR.
Will Houser ran his first collegiate outdoor 800 meters, placing in the top five at 1:55.45.
In the 200 meters, Homsey (21.90), Joshua Johnson (22.15), and Vanhout (22.21) all posted solid marks.
Conner Wirth made his collegiate outdoor debut in style, clocking the top time in the 5,000 meters with a 15:32.75 to close out the final day of competition.
Women's Highlights
Freshman Myla Wilkes made a statement in her outdoor debut, recording the top time in both the 100 meters (11.73) and 200 meters (23.87).
Sierra Parks ran her first collegiate 10,000 meters, posting the second-fastest time of the day at 37:23.82. Emma Hadley ran her first 1,500 meters, finishing sixth in 4:40.08. Also in the 1,500m, CU had a mark of 5:13.57.
In the 800 meters, Helen Carlson recorded the second-best time of the day 2:15.97 in her first collegiate outdoor race.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Ava Goetz ran 14.77 and Riley Burkey clocked 15.33.
CU swept the top three spots in the 400-meter hurdles, led by Aubrey Leweaver in 1:01.29. Senior Emma Pollak opened her final campaign with a 1:01.80, while Abby Miller ran 1:02.29 in her outdoor debut.
In the field events, Amanda Opp threw 42.99 meters in the discus. Elena Opp followed with a mark of 41.16m, just shy of her personal best.
Up next: The distance squad heads to North Carolina next weekend to compete at the NC State Raleigh Relays. The full squad returns to action for their only home meet of the season, the Jerry Quiller Classic, April 4–5 in Boulder.
