Colorado Completes Comeback for 300th Win
August 31, 2025 | Soccer
BOULDER, Colo. – The Colorado Buffaloes faced their first bit of adversity on the season, falling behind early to Wyoming in the team's 2-1 come-from-behind win over Wyoming Sunday at Prentup Field.
Colorado (5-0-1) trailed for the first time all season when it conceded a goal 25 seconds into the match. The Buffs played from behind into the second half, needing a pair of goals from Jace Holley and Reagan Kotschau to finish the Buffs' opening homestand unbeaten.
"It wasn't the start we were looking for," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed after the win. "Credit to Wyoming. They came out and we needed to expect this [kind of play] and I don't think we were ready. After that, we played pretty well. We just didn't create enough in the first half.
"We hadn't been losing all year, so facing a little adversity is ok. I'm proud of how we came back and at the end of the day, sometimes every shot goes in, sometimes you have to scrap out a 2-1 win, and that's what happened today."
Sunday's win checked off two different milestones. It was the program's 300th all-time victory and the 150th for Sanchez in his 14th season at CU.
"300 wins says we're a top program and that we've been a top program for a long time," Sanchez noted. "A lot of credit to Austin Daniels, rest in peace. Then obviously Bill Hempen, who won a lot of those games as well. We've had a lot of stability. This is a place where people want to come and stay. I'm in that boat as well. I just feel fortunate to be here, fortunate to coach this team this long, and couldn't be more excited about the future."
Holley continued her hot start, picking up her seventh goal of the season to tie the match. The goal also brought her back to even with teammate Hope Leyba for the team lead in points with 18. Sunday's match brought an end to Leyba's goal-scoring streak. The NCAA leader in goals finished with three shots but was held off the scoresheet for the first time.
Jordan Nytes rebounded nicely after Wyoming's first shot found the back of the net. She blanked the Cowgirls the rest of the way, making four saves.
How It Happened
Wyoming caught the Buffs on their heels right off the opening kickoff, going down the field and scoring the game's first shot off the foot of Alyssa Glover, putting CU behind in the match for the first time all season.
Colorado outshot the Cowgirls 10-3 in the first half and forced UW goalkeeper Haley Bartel to make four saves in the period.
CU went scoreless in the first half for the first time this season, and it was just the second scoreless half of the season, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Freshman Ruby Hayward almost buried a highlight goal with a scissor kick attempt off a corner kick, but the shot missed just wide left in the 36th minute.
The Cowgirls almost added on a second goal at the start of the second half when Hadley Linder corralled a bouncing ball 10 yards out, but Nytes dove to her right, keeping the ball out of the net.
Vivi Zacarias, another one of CU's freshmen, almost played the hero in the 59th minute, launching a shot from distance off the far post.
Colorado didn't wait much longer, finally punching one through in the 60th minute with Holley saving the ball off the end line and then dribbling in and scooping a left-footed shot into the far side of the net, evening the game at 1-1.
"We were getting numbers forward, getting wide," Sanchez said of his team's second-half adjustments. "We were creating lots of corners and deep throw-ins and so forth. We just played with a little more urgency. The first goal of the game, there's no urgency. Now we're down 25 seconds into the game. Now you're chasing the game. However, if you're going to go down, that's the time to go down. But credit Wyoming. I thought they played very well."
Colorado kept on the gas in the final 30 minutes and converted the game-winner in the 82nd minute off another scramble in front of the Wyoming net. Nytes served a free kick from the Colorado end of the field deep into the Wyoming box, and Emerson Layne was able to get a touch on the ball before Kotschau could deliver it home for the 2-1 lead.
Wyoming had a chance on net in the final minute, but Nytes was in position to cap off the victory.

Quotes
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On handling the adversity – "At the end of the day, you play to win. I suppose we could have kind of started to turn on each other or kind of lose some confidence, but I was really pleased with how we came out in the second half. We deserve the win. Let's make no mistake about it. However, we can't put ourselves in that position where we're chasing the game."
Junior Reagan Kotschau
On completing the Comeback – "Our first half wasn't the best. So, when we were down 1-0 going into the second half, I feel like our mentality just had to switch and get gritty and really dig deep and try to get that one goal. After Jace got that one goal, I feel like it kind of sparked us a little bit to get that second one, which we did."
