Kornieck Sets Record in Buffs' Draw

October 03, 2019 | Soccer

The senior becomes CU's all-time career points leader

BOULDER – Fans did not have to wait long to witness history at Prentup Field on Thursday. Colorado senior Taylor Kornieck scored in the 3rd minute of Colorado's 2-2 draw against the Oregon Ducks, becoming CU's all-time career points leader.

The Henderson, Nev., native, started the day with 93 career points and tied with former Buff Nikki Marshall. Kornieck broke the record on CU's third shot of the afternoon, giving her 95 career points (36 G, 23 A).

No. 17 Colorado now sits at 9-1-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in Pac-12 play. Oregon records its first point in the Pac-12 standings, moving to 0-1-1 in the conference and 4-2-4 overall.

Kornieck's goal was the only offense in the first half that saw CU outshoot Oregon, 10-3. The Buffaloes controlled the first half, not allowing a shot on net by the Ducks. Colorado continued to put together solid scoring chances following the opening goal but could not capitalize before the break.

The Ducks took advantage of CU's missed opportunities in the second half, scoring their two goals in the final 20 minutes of play.

The Buffaloes outshot Oregon, 9-6, in the two overtime periods but could not get a winner past Oregon's Katelyn Carter.

How it happened
Colorado opened quick on the attack. CU had two shots from Camilla Shymka and Kornieck in the first two minutes of play. Shymka's chance was blocked by an Oregon' defender and Kornieck lined up the rebound from 16 yards out that was tipped by Carter and deflected off the crossbar.

Colorado kept the pressure on in the Ducks zone and regained possession. Kornieck stole the ball back and played it on to Shymka. Shymka found freshman Tessa Barton at the top of the goal box and she dropped the ball to Kornieck in the upper right corner. Kornieck took two steps and shed the defender, leaving her all alone from 17 yards out. The senior teed up a rocket with her left foot and blasted it into the left corner for the record and the 1-0 lead.

Libby Geraghty and Barton both had multiple chances to build on CU's lead in the first half. Barton had two identical looks that missed the right post and Geraghty put a header just over the crossbar in the 25th minute.

Geraghty would capitalize for the Buffs in the 53rd minute. Jalen Tompkins booted a ball downfield and it was flicked back by on Oregon defender. Geraghty won the race to the ball and put a move on Carter, beating the UO goalkeeper one-on-one.

The tides turned on the Buffs in the 72nd minute. Oregon's Chardonnay Curran got the Ducks on the board off a ball that was played back to her off a CU defender. She chipped a shot towards the right corner and past Tompkins, cutting the CU lead in half.

Sophomore Chaynee Kingsbury had one of the best opportunities for the Buffs in the second half. She put a left-footer just wide of the top right corner in the 79th minute, that would have but the Buffs back up by two.

The Ducks would get even in the 86th minute off a scramble in front of Tompkins. UO's Emma Eddy tapped in a ball on the right post that just got past Tompkins to tie the match.

Kornieck, Barton and Geraghty each had chances to win the game for the Buffs in the first overtime. Kornieck and Barton combined off for back-to-back chances in the 91st minute and Geraghty stuck one right off the crossbar in the final minute of the period.

Hannah Sharts had CU's best look in the second overtime. She put a header on towards the net but was blocked out of mid-air by the UO defense before crossing the goal line.

Key Statistic: Tompkins only faced three shots on net. Her first save of the match came at the start of the second overtime in the 101st minute.

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez

Overall thoughts

"Credit to Oregon. They just kept playing. We talked about how this team [Oregon] is not going to roll over. They played tough games non-conference. They played Washington tough on the road last week. Credit to them. I wasn't pleased with how we defended with a 2-0 lead. I think we really stopped playing and once we gave up that goal to allow them to get back into it, you could just see the momentum shift. I'm not surprised they got the second goal. Having said that, I was pleased with what we did in overtime. I thought we were on the front foot. Sometimes soccer gives and sometimes it takes away. We just have to bounce back and be ready for Oregon State on Sunday."

On Taylor Kornieck
"Obviously, she'd rather have the win. I'm sure she probably said that. If we are going to put into context all the great players that have played at Colorado it is a tremendous accomplishment, especially for a center midfielder. It is not like she is a striker, getting tons of service in the box. She has to earn every goal she gets. We are proud of her and it's not unexpected. We expect a lot out of her."

Senior Taylor Kornieck
On setting the record
"I came out just wanting it so bad. Tessa [Barton] did a really good job of keeping the ball in the box. She played it back and I took it with my second foot. It just found the back post and it was really exciting for me."

On goal celebration
"I just wanted to celebrate with everybody. Without them, I never would have gotten here. I'm proud of them."

Overall thoughts
"I thought we came out strong and had two great goals. It was just unfortunate to have them come back. It is what it is, and we are just going to have to move on."
