Kornieck Key as Buffs Topple Bears

September 19, 2019 | Soccer

The senior scored two goals in CU's 4-0 win

BOULDER – Colorado senior Taylor Kornieck had her way against Northern Colorado on Thursday. She provided two goals and an assist in the first half of the Buffaloes' 4-0 win over the Bears.

Kornieck followed up her two-goal performance at No. 6 Florida State last week with an early brace in the first half. Thursday marked her sixth career multi-goal match. She also picked up an assist on Tessa Barton's goal. Her five points in the first half were the third most in CU history.

The milestones continued for the Henderson, Nev., native. Her opening goal pushed her past Fran Munnelly for second on CU's career points list, finishing the afternoon with 88 points. Kornieck's two goals also moved her past Katie Griffin for second in career goals (33).

The Buffs controlled the game from the opening kickoff. CU enjoyed a 3-0 lead at the half. The team's starters played sparingly in the second half, allowing every available field player to get into the match. Junior Katie Joella added the Buffs' fourth goal in the 86th minute.

How it happened
Te. Barton's hard work helped set up the first goal of the afternoon. She attempted to break through the UNC defense and drew a foul just outside the goal box. Kornieck, the team's penalty kick specialist, approached the free kick with the same precision. She fired the ball from 20-yards out through the UNC wall and into the top left corner for the early lead.

CU's second goal also came from Kornieck. This time it was a long header in the 17th minute. Tatum Barton played the ball up high to Kayleigh Webb. Webb served the ball into Kornieck at the top of the penalty area. Kornieck's header floated high towards the right corner of the net and past the ill-timed jump of the UNC keeper.

Crisp passing from the Buffs provided the setup for CU's third goal. Ta. Barton tapped the ball back to Kornieck who made a lead pass for Te. Barton. The younger Barton ran past the UNC defender and put a left-footed swing on the ball into the lower right corner.

The Buffs and Kornieck kept hunting for the net in the second half. CU doubled its shots in the final period, firing off 16. Kornieck had a few good looks in search of a hat-trick. Ta. Barton and Amaya Gonzalez also had good chances.

Joella was able to find the net in the 86th minute, closing out CU's scoring with her first goal of the season.

Key Statistics: Colorado had its best offensive day of the season. CU outshot UNC, 24-4. The four shots by the Bears were the least allowed by the Buffs this season.

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez

On Taylor Kornieck
"
I had an appreciation for her the first day she showed up in our program. She is a program changer for us. There are a lot of storied players in this program and she'll finish right at the top. She still has work to do. There are a lot of good attacking players in the country, but the extra work she has to do on both sides of the ball makes her unique. She did very well today. I'm glad that she's starting to hit her stride."

On the CU's offense
"The first couple of goals kind of got us some momentum. I thought when we subbed we got everybody about 40 minutes which is good. These players have been busting their butts all week. Some haven't played in a few weeks so it's great to get everybody in. I didn't think there was a drop-off. I thought we created a lot of chances. We're still not quite efficient enough but four goals against a good team—to be fair to Northern Colorado we're the third power five team they've faced on the road."

Senior Taylor Kornieck
On her goals
"Well, my first goal was a free-kick outside the box and I was waiting for that one. I was right in the center of the park and then I just hit as hard as I could and it skimmed off the shoulder of the wall and went in. My second goal was a header and it kind of just went up. I thought it went straight up but I saw the goalie kind of back up a little and just miss caught it and went in."

On the team this season
"I'm seeing a lot of great players coming in. Everybody ff the bench is doing well and helping the program and we are just a really deep team this year. And I'm proud of everybody."

On her assist
"I have a really great connection with the forwards. I just love slipping them in behind [the defense]. That's just what I like to do. I found Tessa running in behind and she got a free goal. I'm really proud of her too. She's really stepping up."

On the team's offense
"We definitely have gelled. We're just figuring out ways to play a lot better with each other and I'm just looking forward to our next game."
