Wahlqvist Gets Eighth Slalom, Buffs Second At Utah

February 10, 2025 | Skiing

PARK CITY, Utah – On the nation's most storied alpine program, there is a new king of the slalom mountain. Filip Wahlqvist became the first men's alpine skier in Colorado Buffaloes history to win eight slalom races in his career while extending his CU record win streak to six as CU struggled but hung on to finish second at the Utah Invitational Monday at Utah Olympic Park.

Just 36 of the 84 collegiate racers finished the two slalom races, and that included just three of the 10 Buffs that started.

Wahlqvist had the fastest first run in the field and hung on for another impressive win, taking the race by 1.27 seconds.  He remains undefeated in four slalom races this season and has won six straight dating back to last season's RMISA and NCAA Championships.  No CU skier had won more than four consecutive slalom races previously.

Additionally, it's his eighth career slalom win, setting a new CU standard.  He had tied the career mark with his seventh win about a week ago when he tied John Skajem (1986-87).  More impressively, he accomplished the feat in just his 11th career start.  It is also just the fourth time a skier has won four slalom races in a season and he's just one away from the season record of five set by David Ketterer in 2017.  Skajem won four in 1986 and Wahlqvist joined those two in the four win club last season.

Louis Fausa was the other CU men's skier to finish the race, doing so in 10th place.  He had the 21st fastest first run but then scorched the field for the fastest second run to move up 11 spots.

Katie Fleckenstein was the only CU woman to finish and did so in eighth place, a new career best.  Louison Accambray, who won her third straight GS race on Sunday, had apparently finished fifth but was disqualified in her second run.  Cathinka Lunder and Ashley Campbell both didn't finish their respective second runs.

On the men's side, Etienne Mazellier and Jacob Dilling didn't finish their first runs and Justin Bigatel and Jack Reich didn't finish their second runs.  Bigatel had the third fastest first run.

UP NEXT: As we hit mid-February, the end of the regular season is in sight, as are the RMISA Championships.  Both will take place in Alaska.  The Nordic teams will compete at the Alaska Fairbanks Invitational this weekend to close out their regular season and then head to Anchorage for the RMISA Championships.  The alpine teams will close out the UAA Invitational, which included Nordic races as part of the US National Championships in early January, before also embarking on the RMISA Championships.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Buffs certainly had a rough day as a team, with only one woman and two men finishing their respective races.  But at the end of the day, the Buffs were out of reach of Utah and still hung onto second place, and those that finished did improve their respective NCAA qualification numbers.  Wahlqvist locked up the top slalom seed

TEAM NOTES:
•    The Buffs finished second in the meet with 569 points, 188 behind Utah's total of 757 and 34.5 ahead of Denver (534.5).
•    The Buffs finished third in Nordic and second in alpine, winning the men's GS race as the only one not won by the Utes.
•    CU scored 61 points in the men's race with 40 scored by Wahlqvist and 21 by Fausa.
•    Fleckenstein scored 23 points in the women's race.

MEN'S ALPINE NOTES:
•    Wahlqvist won his sixth straight slalom race, fourth of this season, and eighth slalom race of his career.  He has won eight slalom race in 11 starts and 10 finishes, all in the top 5 with nine podiums.  It was also his 11th career podium in alpine races, and 16th top 5 finish.
•    Fausa finished 10th, his sixth straight top 10 finish, and his second 10th place slalom finish of the season.  He picked up his 30th career top 10 finish, 11th in slalom races, and he has 39 top 20s in 41 finishes and 57 starts.

WOMEN'S ALPINE NOTES:
•    Fleckenstein finished eighth and picked up the first top 10 of her collegiate career.  This season she has started all eight races and finished six with four top 20s.
