Lewis record game powers Buffs over Weber State in home opener
BOULDER - Colorado constructed an offensively dominant first half orchestrated by an historic performance from quarterback Julian Lewis to execute an assertive 52-21 win over Weber State at Folsom Field Saturday afternoon.
In front of 49,363 fans, Colorado (2-0) went on a scoring spree, collecting four passing touchdowns, three rushing touchdowns, and a field goal. CU had 398 passing yards alongside 180 rushing yards. It is the first time in 12 years that Colorado recorded a game with 400 pass yards and 150 rush yards.
"I am ecstatic about the win, but my expectations far exceed our productivity of the day," Head Coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders said.
The Buffaloes spread the wealth, with five players scoring in the first half alone, just the third time since 2007 a Colorado team has accomplished that feat. It is also the third time in CU history the Buffs have had two 100-yard receivers and a 100-yard rusher, with the last time taking place in 2018.
Lewis boasted 366 passing yards, 74% completion rate and five touchdowns, etching himself in the Colorado history books by breaking or tying four all-time Colorado records.
"It's a blessing being 2-0," Lewis said. "That is what is beautiful about football, it's just every week you get the chance to prove yourself."
Micah Welch scored his 10th touchdown of his career, becoming the fourth player in the Coach Prime Era to get to 10 or more touchdowns, joining Travis Hunter (21), LaJohntay Wester (11) and Omarion Miller (10). Welch is also the first 100-yard rusher in the Coach Prime Era.
Joseph Williams, with 123 yards receiving, a 100% completion rate, and two touchdowns, reached the 100-yard plateau for the second time as a Buffalo. His last 100-yard game was against Iowa State in 2025, hauling in 8 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown.
Ernest Campbell, the junior Sacramento State transfer, scored his first touchdown at Colorado late in the first quarter.
How it Happened
On a sunny Saturday afternoon in front of an energetic home crowd, the Buffaloes showed they were ready to dominate offensively. On their very first play from scrimmage to start the game, Lewis threw a quick play-action pass to DeAndre Moore Jr., who ran it in for a 66-yard Colorado touchdown at 14:25 in the first quarter. Elliot Arnold converted the extra point to make it 7-0 CU.
On the following drive, Weber State's offense marched 38 yards, but the Buffaloes defense stopped the Wildcats on a fourth-and-one rushing attempt, forcing a turnover on downs at the 37-yard line. Two plays later, Lewis connected with Williams on another play-action pass for a 63-yard Colorado touchdown with 11:54 to go in the first quarter to increase the CU advantage to 14-0.
With 8:54 left in the first, Weber State forced a Colorado fumble and secured possession at the CU 27-yard line, setting up WSU quarterback Nate Dahle, who threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Robert Young to halve the Buffaloes lead to 14-7.
The Buffs answered the Wildcats' touchdown with yet another big play. With 4:52 remaining in the first quarter, Lewis found Campbell on a 48-yard touchdown pass which capped an 88-yard drive and put Colorado back up 14 at 21-7.
On Weber State's next possession, Brandon Fontenette intercepted a Dahle pass with 1:19 left in the first to close out a dominating opening quarter.
Welch then scampered 55 yards on the very first play of the second stanza to cap a five play, 71-yard drive that took just 1:29 off the clock and extended the Buffs cushion to 28-7.
Weber State's Dahle responded by throwing a 70-yard pass to Noah Kjar to again bring the Wildcats within a pair of touchdowns at 28-14, but Colorado got three first downs from Kam Perry, Danny Scudero, and Moore before Lewis threw a 32-yard rainbow to Williams to make it 35-14 home team with 7:38 to play in the half.
With less than two minutes to go in the second quarter, Lewis engineered a beautiful seven-play, 55-yard drive that culminated with the quarterback running it in from three yards out to give Colorado a 42-14 lead and cap a personally historic first half for redshirt freshman from Carrollton, Georgia.
The Buffs put together another impressive drive to start the third quarter, this time on the ground. JaQuail Smith and Welch fueled a 55-yard Colorado drive, with 16 and 27 rushing yards, respectively, which resulted in a 52-yard field goal by Arnold with 8:09 remaining in the third to extend the lead to 45-14. Arnold's boot was the longest for a CU kicker in five years, tied for the longest field goal by a freshman, and set a record for the longest made field goal in a first attempt in program history.
After taking over for Lewis halfway through the third quarter, Colorado freshman quarterback Kaneal Sweetwyne, who was taking his first college football snaps, scampered into the endzone from 9-yards out with 11:35 remaining in the fourth to put the home team ahead 52-14.
Weber State's Dahle connected with Njar for a 12-yard touchdown with 7:42 remaining in the fourth quarter to make the score 52-21 before Jah Jah Boyd added the exclamation point by forcing a fumble that was recovered by Carson Crawford to secure the Colorado win and extend the Buffs winning streak to two straight games.
