Freshman Roo Yarnell-Williams picks up the game-winner
BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes soccer team completed its first 6-0-0 homestand in program history on Sunday. Freshman Roo Yarnell-Williams recorded the lone tally and the Buffs fended off the Baylor Lady Bears, 1-0.Â
CU's six straight wins match its best start to a season since 2013.Â
Yarnell-Williams entered back into the starting lineup and continued to be clutch for the Buffs in big moments. She headed the ball in in the 16th minute and led the team with six shots on the day. Â
Baylor (3-1-1) began the afternoon in control of the opening minutes. The Lady Bears put the first shot on net 30 seconds into the contest. Baylor outshot the Buffs 4-1 in the first 14 minutes of the match. Senior Taylor Kornieck got CU's first attempt of the day in the 10th minute.Â
How it happened
Colorado outlasted Baylor's strong start and weathered the physical play early on. Once the two sides settled in the Buffs were able to find a comfortable rhythm.Â
Senior Jalen Tompkins denied Baylor's early attempts making two saves in the first half. Her second save was off a hard shot that she was able to corral and throw out, leading to an offensive push. The ball was pushed upfield to Yarnell-Williams who sent a long shot wide of the net in the 14th minute.Â
Colorado regained possession in its defensive zone and immediately rushed up the pitch. Stephanie Zuniga took the ball up the left sideline, centering it to Kornieck in the midfield-circle. Kornieck touched it forward for Gabbi Chapa who sent the ball into the box from just of the Pac-12 field logo. Her service floated across the goal box and Yarnell-Williams met the ball three-yards off the line for the finish.
The goal came on CU's first shot on goal and third shot of the day. The score deflated the Lady Bears and Colorado did not let up. Tatum Barton had an in-close header chance in the 17th minute that went just over the crossbar. CU would go on and outshoot Baylor, 6-1, the rest of the half.
The Bears put the pressure back on CU in the second half. The biggest play of the period came in the 70th minute when Tompkins robbed Maddie Algya and the Lady Bears of the game-tying goal. The laser of a shot came from 28 yards out and bent towards the upper right corner. Tompkins ran across the goal line  and leaped to meet the bal for her third and final save of the game.Â
Key Statistics: Tompkins' three saves were the most she's made in a shutout this season. The win was her 21st career solo-shutout. Â

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez
On 6-0 start
"I think it started at about 5:30 last night when we went to a team dinner at six. You could just see and feel the energy in the whole town of Boulder but you can see the focus in the player's eyes. This is a game that we were against the Big 12 champs. You can see how tough they are to play. We knew it would be a one-goal game. At the end of the day made the one play that ends up winning the game and we defended great. It was a great win and a great way to finish off the homestand. As you know, two of our next three are on the road against very good teams. So we have to regroup and get ready for Thursday."
On the success of CU athletics this weekend
"I just think there's a good vibe within the department from Rick George and down. I forgot to mention Jesse [Mahoney and volleyball] beating the No. 5 team the country with a young team. Everyone thought they might be down a little bit. And not only winning but the sweeping. It was a good energy and a great crowd today and a lot of student-athletes here. We want to kind of continue that momentum. And like I said we have a big one coming up on Thursday."
On Roo Yarnell-Williams
"We knew she was capable of this. You never know as a freshman, but the thing that I like about her is that she is super coachable, and she works hard. At the end of the day, a lot of games are like today where you have to bust your butt and work hard. You have to cover ground and do some of the dirty work, and she is willing to do that. It was a great layoff from Taylor [Kornieck] to find Gabbi [Chapa] and she whipped that thing in there the first time to the far post. It looks easy, but when the ball is flying in the air for 35 yards and it's over the keeper's head and you don't have a tight angle, that is a nice finish. I thought after that that our back four were fantastic, they all played 90 minutes, and JJ [Tompkins] made the one save that she needed to make. It was a great result for us."
Freshman Roo Yarnell-Williams
On going unbeaten during the homestand
"I think it was very important to get a win today. They were ranked #21 [last week] and haven't lost a game either. So, coming in and getting this win today helps us get ahead of the game and think that we can pull it off against Florida State."
On the goal
"It just started from the middle. Taylor [Kornieck] played a great ball out wide to Gabbi [Chapa], who looked up and opened her hips up. Gabbi and I made eye contact and I knew that it was going to go in from that moment. It was a beautiful ball in, beyond perfect. I don't think it could have gotten any more on target."
On physical play
"I just wanted to win. These [Baylor] players were a lot more aggressive than any of the teams that we have played against so far. I just came out knowing that I had to get the ball off my foot early, to stay safe and make something happen on the field. I think that, honestly, our whole team, just totally sped up the game. I think that's what put them on their heels and got us the win."
On start to her career
"I have surprised myself. I didn't expect to come in and play, I didn't expect to come in and be starting and have such a big impact on the field. I mean, I'm grateful because I don't think it would have happened without my whole team. All the goals that I've scored are a team effort. There's not one that has been just an individual effort. I think that's very important, that we're all bonding and connecting on that type of level, on and off the field."
