Indoor Track and Field Closes Colorado Classic With a Bang
January 18, 2025 | Track and Field
BOULDER – As an arctic blast swept through Boulder overnight, the extreme cold failed to cool the action inside the University of Colorado's Indoor Practice Facility (IPF). The atmosphere was electric as competitors and fans alike witnessed a thrilling meet. Personal records fell, and a major milestone was achieved—a new Colorado soil and facility record—as the Buffaloes hosted the Colorado Classic, their second of three home meets this indoor season.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Sean Carlson aimed to create a premier atmosphere for the mile race and showcase Colorado as a top-tier destination for track meets. If Saturday's race was any indication, his efforts paid off. The Colorado soil and IPF facility records were shattered by three athletes. CSU-Pueblo's Reece Sharman-Newell set the record with a time of 3:59.37, followed closely by unattached runner Yasin Sado at 3:59.56 and Colorado's Isaiah Given, who holds the Buffs' mile record, with a time of 3:59.97.
In the men's 60-meter hurdles, two Buffaloes qualified for the finals. Nick Bianco won Section 1 in the prelims, and John Swabik posted the second-fastest qualifying time. In the finals, Bianco and Swabik finished fourth and fifth, respectively, as Colorado State's Cole Nordman claimed victory with a facility-record time of 7.71.
On the women's side, Jada Green dominated. After recording the fastest prelim time, she continued her momentum in the finals, clearing the hurdles with ease to win in 8.66. Allie Routledge (9.26) and Ava Goetz finished outside the finals, placing eighth and ninth, respectively.
In the men's 60 meters, Johnny Homsy was CU's top finisher, placing fifth with a time of 6.94. For the women, freshman Cydnee Taylor impressed as the top collegiate finisher, securing second overall with a time of 7.58, just shy of her season best. Myla Wilkes tied for second in the prelims during her first collegiate 60-meter race but did not compete in the finals.
In the men's mile, Lukas Haug set a personal best of 4:04.88, running a strong final split of 43.65 to secure victory. He was the only Buffalo in the event. In the women's mile, Emma Hadley led CU, finishing second with a personal-best time of 5:01.04.
Cole Romig competed in his second career 600 meters, finishing second with a time of 1:19.57. CU alumna Abbey Glynn returned to the IPF to win the women's 600 meters in 1:29.29. Colorado's Abby Miller finished with a time of 1:34.07.
In the men's 400 meters, Nick Gehring finished sixth in 49.20, followed by Bianco in eighth at 49.53 and Swabik in 12th with an indoor personal best of 50.06. Aubrey Leneweaver represented CU in the women's 400 meters, finishing first with a time of 56.75.
Will Houser, in his first race of the season, placed seventh in the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:55.09. For the women, Hele Carlson made her collegiate debut, finishing second in 2:10.88. Riley Burkey and Allie Routledge ran personal bests of 2:14.80, finishing sixth and 13th, respectively.
The men's 200 meters featured 12 heats, with CU's Gehring placing 12th overall with a time of 22.68. After scratching from the 60-meter hurdles finals, Wilkes rebounded to win the women's 200 meters in a 28-competitor field with a season-best time of 24.35. Teammate Emma Pollack followed closely with a time of 24.54.
In the women's 3,000 meters, Louise Lounes ran her first indoor race, finishing second with a time of 9:58.75. Teammate Caroline Mehlhorne, in her collegiate debut, placed fourth in 9:59.65.
The Buffaloes will return to action on January 25 at the UCCS Invite, hosted by the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse in Colorado Springs.
